CASTELL BUZZER-BEATER
LIFTS EAGLES TO VICTORY

Juan Castell sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to give host Southwest a 53-51 victory over Varela Tuesday night. The game was close the entire way with the Vipers (7-5) taking a 33-31 lead into the final quarter. The Eagles (8-9) still trailed, 49-45, when Juan Castell scored and was fouled with 1:16 left. His free throw cut the deficit to one. Two Varela free throws followed by two by Jadrian Paz made it Varela 51, Southwest 50, with 17 seconds remaining. Southwest, playing defense, tied up the Viper dribbler and got a jump ball called with 0:13 on the clock. The possession arrow was pointing in the Eagles direction. Southwest missed a shot at 0:04, but Paz stole the ball back. Varela deflected the ball out of bounds with one second left. Southwest's only chance was a catch-and-shoot play and that exactly what Castell pulled off with the buzzer sounding as his 3-pointer went through the hoop to give the Eagles the thrilling win.
