Mike Sheeler is the greatest boys swimmer in Southwest history. An All-American in 1966 in the 200-yard individual medley, he is one of only three Eagles athletes to win three state championships. As a junior, he was the Florida's high school champ in the 200 IM and the 100-yard breaststroke and he repeated as the 200 IM winner at the state meet his senior season. Among his many accomplishments, he defeated Olympian John Nelson in a 200-yard butterfly race while in 12th grade. The summer after graduation, Sheeler was a member of the U.S. national team that toured the "Near East." After high school, he continued swimming competitively while stationed at Naval Station Great Lakes.
