John Hammontree ran the 100-yard dash, the 220, 440, 1/2 mile run and mile relay at Southwest, but is best known for his 50+ year career as a track and cross-country coach. He began his coaching career at Columbus while still in junior college and later coached at Southwest and Coral Park. But he is best known as head coach at Sunset, where he started in 1981 and continues today. John was named the Miami News Cross-Country Coach of the Year in 1979. His 1982 Sunset team finished second in the state and John's teams have recorded multiple district championships. He has served as the Florida Athletic Coaches Association District track chairman 39 times and received the FACA Meritorious Service award for his contributions to high school athletics and his profession. In 2012, he was inducted into the FACA Hall of Fame.
