Fred Ellis was an original faculty member when Southwest opened in 1956 and shaped hundreds of lives as a coach and biology teacher for 34 years. He was an assistant coach on the 1959 state championship track team, then won another state title as head coach in 1971. Ellis was also head cross country coach and an assistant football coach. His squads won numerous district, conference and regional championships and his coaching produced seven state champions in individual events. He was named Florida Track Coach of the Year in 1971 and 1984, and was inducted into the the Florida Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984, and the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1991. Coach Ellis passed away in 2010 at the age of 82.
