NO-HITTER, DURAN’S 9 RBIs LEAD SOUTHWEST, 14-0

Senior Matt Chitwood hurled a no-hitter while striking out 9 to lead host Southwest past Gainesville, 14-0, in a 5-inning game at Andre Dawson Field. Chitwood (2-0) lost his perfect game when he hit Hurricanes’ catcher Steven Fischer with two out in the fourth. Nick Demasi then reached on an error before Chitwood retired the final four hitters to complete his gem. Most of the Eagles’ offense was produced by senior Anthony Duran, who drove in 9 runs with a two-run double to left in the first, a 3-run homer to center in the second, and a grand slam to center in the third. The two home runs were his sixth and seventh of the season, allowing him to pass teammate David Cruz for the county’s home run lead. Duran’s 9 RBIs gave him 32 for the season, also tops in Miami-Dade. Southwest (14-4) got back-to-back home runs from Chris Mourelle and Alexis Cuevas to lead off the 5-run second inning. Mike Godinez was 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored. |
