EAGLES SHOOT THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT (TALON?) IN LOSS

Southwest made numerous costly mistakes in a 14-7 loss to Miami High Thursday night at Curtis Park. The game was scoreless until the Stingarees (2-1) completed a 39-yard scoring pass with 23 seconds remaining in the second quarter. A missed extra point left the Eagles (1-1) trailing 6-0 at the half. The Miami High lead did not last long. Danny McCray returned the opening kickoff of the second half 71 yards to give Southwest a 7-6 lead. On the ensuing set of downs, Miami High fumbled the ball on the Eagles 31-yard line and Alejandro Naranjo returned the loose ball all the way to the Stings 4-yard line. With it looking like Southwest was about to go up 14-6, a bad center-quarterback exchange on first and goal turned the ball right back over to MHS. The Eagles clung to their one-point lead until 4:04 remained in the game, when Miami High scored on an 18-yard pass. A successful two-point conversion made it 14-7. Southwest kept fighting. McCray returned the kickoff 31 yards to the Stingarees 40. An 8-yard reception by Andis Jackson and a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty gave the Eagles a first down at the 16. A 9-yard catch by McCray and a 4-yard run by Telly Sessions made it first-and-goal at the 3-yard line with 1:30 left in the game. Back-to-back delay of game penalties (the third and fourth of the game on Southwest) moved it back to the 13 and the Eagles turned it over on downs. Southwest would have had more delay of game flags had coach Anton Graham not used timeouts to prevent them. Kennedy DeLeon had three sacks to lead the Eagles defense.
