DE LA CRUZ IS DISTRICT 400 m. CHAMP
Frank De La Cruz won the 400 meter race with a time of 50.34 seconds at the District 16-4A meet at Southridge. He also finished second in the 800 meter race, breaking the school record with a time of 1:59.87, shaving almost four seconds off the 10-year-old mark. De La Cruz qualified for the regionals in both events. Tony Rodriguez was the other Eagle to qualify for regionals and he did it in both the triple jump and the long jump. His triple jump of 42 feet, 2 inches was a personal best. Southwest's 4 x 400 meter relay team (Tony Rodriguez, Chris Brice, Fanelle Andrus and Frank De La Cruz) ran the race in 3:39.14, breaking their own school record by more than five seconds. They finished fifth overall, just missing qualifying for regionals as only the top four teams go. The following Eagles also set personal records at the district meet:
Jonathan Campos in the 1600 meters (5:25.73) and in the 3200 meters (12:14.07)
Jose Rodas in the 1600 meters (5:38.21)
Victor Hassing in the 1600 meters (5:43.93)
Nicholas Serrano in the discus (105 ft, 4 inches) and the shot put (33 ft, 10.25 inches)
Sarah Delmazo in the triple jump (29 ft, 9.25 inches)
BENEDICT COLLEGE OFFERS THREE EAGLES TRACK SCHOLARSHIPS
Benedict College, an NCAA division II program in Columbia, South Carolina, has offered track scholarships to Sarah del Mazo, Frank De La Cruz, and Tony Rodriguez. These three, along with Jonathan Bernard, were already offered scholarships to Webber International University in Babson Park, Florida. National Signing Day is later this month.
