Joshua Fernandez scored 20 points and Ray Perez added 18 to lead host Southwest past Westminster Christian, 66-44, Thursday night. But it was the defense, the bench and the crowd that were the stories of the evening. With the exception of the second half of the third quarter, the Eagles continually frustrated the Warriors offense. The Southwest bench was responsible for 30 of the 66 points and the game was played before the biggest home crowd in several years thanks, in part, to the Southwest Fan Club formed by teacher Richard Mantrana. Carlos Taveras added 14 points and 7 rebounds and Sebastian Ching had three steals. The win was the fourth in a row for Southwest (4-1) while Westminster Christian fell to 2-5 despite a win over perennial power South Miami.
The scoring:
Joshua Fernandez 20
Ray Perez 18
Carlos Tavares 14
Josue Mendoza 8
Jaycee Ruiz 4
Christian Sarria 2

Christian Gutierrez scored 13 of his 16 points in the third quarter to spark the junior varsity to a 52-45 victory over visiting Westminster Christian. The Baby Eagles (3-2) trailed 28-20 at the half before Gutierrez' shooting caused the team to come alive and outscore the Baby Warriors, 21-8, in the third period. Julio Bardales added 14 points for Soutthwest.
