Joshua Fernandez scored 25 points, pulled down 6 rebounds and stole the ball twice to lead host Southwest past Pace Friday night, 66-59. Fernandez' big game was timely as leading scorer Carlos Taveras sat out the contest with an iujury. The Eagles (2-1) led by six points after one quarter and at halftime, then extended the margin to 50-37 entering the final period. The Spartans (1-2) cut the lead to five at 58-53 with three minutes remaining, but never got any closer. Josnel Aloma led Southwest in rebounds with 7, assists with 6 and charges drawn with 2. The Southwest junior varsity (1-2) picked up its first win of the season, beating visiting Pace, 54-29. The Baby Eagles had four players in double figures with Roberth Hernandez scoring 18, Jose Orama with 13, Christian Gutierrez with 11 and Jason Ortega with 10. The victory was marred by a serious ankle injury suffered in the first quarter by Southwest's Juanmarco Diaz, the son of legendary former Eagles volleyball coach Mauricio Diaz. He was taken by Fire-Rescue to Miami Children's Hospital and will miss the rest of the season.
