EAGLES UPSET BEACH TO ADVANCE TO DISTRICT SEMIS

Seventh-seeded Southwest upset number #2 seed Miami Beach, 49-45, in the quarter finals of the district 16-6A tournament Tuesday night. The visiting Eagles (8-4) won the game on the foul line, making 17 of 21 free throws, including 11 of 12 in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Ethan St.  Prix got Southwest rolling, hitting eight of his 17 points in the first quarter. Alejandro Diaz made three 3-pointers and all six of his foul shots to finish with fifteen points. The Hi-Tides (12-10) were down three points with 41 seconds left when their coach made a major error. Ivan Fonseca was fouled going to the basket and the Beach coach protested the call, earning a technical. That meant four free throws (2 for the shooting foul and 2 for the tech) plus possession for the Eagles. Fonseca made one foul shot and Thiago Bourroul made both shots for the tech to make the score, 47-41. The Hi-Tides made a basket with 21 second left to cut the deficit to four. They quickly fouled Diaz after the inbounds pass and he made both free throws to clinch the win. Beach scored at the buzzer to cut the final margin to four points. The Eagles advance to a semi-final match up against #3 seed Krop 6pm Thursday night at Southridge.
