Jaycee Ruiz, Sebastian Ching and Josnel Aloma each scored four points in overtime as Southwest defeated host Coral Reef, 63-57, in a district game Thursday night. The Eagles (10-3) trailed by five points with a minute left in regulation but Carlos Taveras took control, scoring a basket with 52 seconds left to cut the deficit to three. Southwest got the ball back and called timeout with 6.2 seconds left to set up a final play. The ball went back to Taveras who, calmly and confidently, drained the tying 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded, sending the game into overtime. Taveras finished with 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots. There is no truth to the rumor that he also worked the concession stand at halftime.
The scoring:
Carlos Taveras 21
Josnel Aloma 12
Jaycee Ruiz 10
Ray Perez 10
Sebastian Ching 6
Joshua Fernandez 3
Collin Bethel 1

Julio Bardales scored 16 points to lead the junior varsity to a 40-28 victory over host Cooral Reef. The Baby Eagles are 7-5.
