MIAMI BEACH WINS SEASON OPENER
Miami Beach outscored Southwest,
24-15, in the third quarter to break open a close game and hand the
visiting Eagles a 61-52 season-opening loss. Southwest pulled to within
five points, 57-52, with 1:20 left in the game but the Hi-Tides scored
the final four points to close out the victory. The Eagles were hurt
by the absence of shooting guard Albert Hernandez who did not dress
due to a lower extremity injury. Also not helpful was the dismal 16-for-29
shooting from the free throw line. Chris Murray had a double-double
for Southwest with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
JV DEFEATS HI-TIDES
Gilbert Gonzalez scored with 29 seconds left to give the Southwest junior varsity a 1-point overtime win over Miami Beach, 55-54, in its season opener. Carlos Luis had hit a 3-pointer one minute earlier. Freshman Joel Aloma led the Baby Eagles with 14 points.
