Jose Vazquez starred in both baseball (outfielder) and football (wide receiver) at Southwest before going on to play baseball collegiately at Central Florida Community College and Tennessee. His senior year with the Eagles saw him bat .453 with 4 HRs and 27 RBIs. After earning All-American honors with the Vols, he was chosen in the 42nd round of the amateur draft in 1992 by St. Louis and reached high-A ball before retiring in 1994. Jose went on to a distinguished 22-year career as a strength coach first with the Mets and then with the Rangers, who won the world series in his final year. Winner of the Nolan Ryan award as strength coach of the year in 2014, he has co-authored both a book and an article in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. Jose is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, has been married 34 years and has three children and one grandchild.
