Ivey Armstrong
Baseball, basketball, football
Graduated: 1964
Inducted: 2026

Southwest has had well over 40 of its baseball players sign professional contracts, but the very first was Ivey Armstrong. As a senior, he batted .353 and was named first team All-County. An all-around athlete, Ivey was a defensive back and punter for the football team and a sharp-shooting guard in basketball. He was the only unanimous selection to the 1964 American Legion baseball All-Star team. Ivey went on to play baseball at Miami-Dade Junior College where he was an honorable mention Freshmen All-American and first team All-State. The Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the second round of the January 1966 amateur draft. Six months later, in the middle of his first minor league season, he was drafted again, this time by Uncle Sam. His service in the National Guard did not prevent him from being named Rookie of the Year in the class A New York-Penn league after hitting .351 with five homers and 70 RBIs in only 108 games. His baseball IQ was so high, he was made a player-coach of the Dodgers farm team in Daytona Beach. Ivey retired after four years of minor league ball, and had a long career with Winn Dixie before passing away in 2013 at the age of 67.
