Dane Johnson made his impact on Southwest sports in his very first year as an Eagle. As a sophomore, he was promoted from the JV to the varsity basketball team, became a starter and was named honorable mention All-Dade. Dane scored 31 points in a loss to Southridge. In an All-Comers track meet after his sophomore year, he placed first in the 14-15 age group in the long jump, discus and low hurdles. A week later, Dane finished first in the pole vault. The following week, he won the 440-yard dash. That summer, Dane went to the AAU Junior Olympic championships in Bozeman, Montana, and finished sixth in the decathlon, in only his third decathlon meet ever. As a junior, he was again Honorable Mention All-Dade in basketball and was the top runner on the cross-country team. As a senior, Dane scored 34 points against Columbus and averaged 16.7 points and 9.5 rebounds. He was honorable mention All-County in cross-country, basketball and first team All-County in track. Dane earned a basketball scholarship to Biscayne College (now St. Thomas University), but skipped his senior season when he was drafted by the Blue Jays in the second round despite having never played high school baseball and pitching sparingly in college. He pitched three years in the majors for the White Sox, Blue Jays and A's. Dane was the Blue Jays' bullpen coach from 2015-2018, after serving as a roving minor league pitching instructor with the organization since 2004. He was named the pitching coach of the Omaha Storm Chasers, the AAA affiliate of the Royals, prior to the 2020 and remains in that role today.
