2003 Boys Volleyball Team
Inducted: 2026
The Eagles finished 31-0 and won the state championship in the first year the FHSAA had a state tournament. They entered the state tournament 28-0 and faced Coral Springs in the quarterfinal match. Southwest had little trouble dispatching the Colts, 15-3, 15-8. That set up a semifinal contest against neighborhood rival Coral Park. The Rams were overpowered, 15-6, 15-11. Later the same day, it was Southwest vs. Orlando Cypress Creek for the state title. The Bears were no match for the Eagles either, falling 15-3, 15-12, in the championship match. That capped a remarkable season in which the team lost only three sets. The Eagles were not only state champions, but they achieved the best record of any high school team in any sport in Florida for the 2002-03 school year. It was the first state championship for a Southwest team since the boys bowling team took states in 1978. Bowling was not a sanctioned FHSAA sport at the time, so volleyball won our school's first FHSAA state title since the boys track team won 32 years earlier. This team set the standard for Eagles volleyball. The program has since won two more state championships under coach Mauricio Diaz and have made the title match on five other occasions.
