LADY EAGLES COME FROM BEHIND TO WIN OPENER

Down by 11 points entering the final quarter, visiting Southwest roared back to defeat Varela, 26-25, Monday afternoon in the season opener for both teams. The Lady Eagles went the first 7:20 of the game without a point and trailed 10-2 after one quarter, 16-6 at halftime and 23-12 entering the final period. Sophia Piñeiro, who had eight of her game-high 12 points in the fourth quarter, scored with 1:29 left to cut the deficit to one. Haylie Rodriguez rebounded a Lady Vipers miss and took it the length of the floor for a layup to give Southwest its first and only lead with 27 seconds left. Piñeiro stole the ball twice in the final eight seconds to preserve the victory.
