Visiting Southwest fought hard after the loss of starting quarterback
Caden Borgardt but came up short in a 28-14 loss at Coral Shores. The Hurricanes scored on their opening possession to take a 7-0 lead. Borgardt was injured on the Eagles first possession and watched the rest of the game on crutches. Pedro Cabrera took over at quarterback and Southwest tied the score
when Matthew Lefevre broke tackles on a 3-yard run.
Christian Espinal forced a fumble that Jordan Smith recovered, but the Eagles couldn't convert it into points. Coral Shores scored late in the half to take a 14-7 halftime lead. In the second half, another 3-yard rush by Lefevre evened the score at 14-14. The Hurricanes scored to go up, 20-14, but missed a two-point conversion when
Cristian Ferreiro made the tackle. On Coral Shores' final TD, they were able to successfully make the 2-point conversion. Southwest scored with 25 seconds remaining in the game, but officials called it back due to a penalty. The preseason game does not count in either team's won-loss record. The Eagles open the regular season Friday night against rival Coral Park at Tropical Park. |
