KILLIAN GETS 1 INFIELD HIT, BEATS SOUTHWEST, 1-0

Matthew Fernandez lost his no-hitter and shutout on an infield hit as host Killian (10-2-1) defeated Southwest, 1-0. Fernandez, who lowered his ERA to 0.35, struck out seven Cougars through the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Killian's leadoff batter reached on an error, was bunted to second and kept heading to third where the throw from first was off mark. After a foul pop for the second out, a ground ball hopped over the third baseman's head, was fielded by the shortstop but is on-the-mark throw was not in time as the game's only run scored. Fernandez had Southwest's only hit through the first four innings but the Eagles (6-3) threatened in the fifth. With one out, Tyler Duarte beat out a ground ball to third for a hit, advanced to second on a comebacker and took third on an infield single by Matthew Ferrer. Ferrer stole second to put two runners in scoring position but Cougars pitcher Alan Valverde recorded one of his eight strikeouts to get out of the jam. Southwest loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning on a walk to J.J. Cominsky and infield singles by Duarte and Matthew Someillan. But Valverde got a strikeout and a grounder to third to end the game. The Eagles had been 4-0 in one-run games this year if you include the preseason win over Varela. The box score is here.
