SJOSTROM FLIRTS WITH PERFECT GAME IN 12-2 WIN OVER VARELA

Gabe Sjostrom lost his perfect game in the final inning as he pitched Southwest past host Varela, 12-2, in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule. The Eagles (11-7-1, 5-2) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Danny Cruz was hit by a pitch, moved to second on an Erick Mondelo sacrifice bunt, and scored on an Erick Orbeta double. Orbeta then stole third and scored on a ground ball by Damian Alfonso. Southwest added two more runs in the second on walks to Eddie Sierra and Jorge Tejeda, a stolen base, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Jordan Worley. A single by Robert Cruz and a walk to Danny Cruz loaded the bases and Mondelo singled to make it 4-0. The Eagles scored six runs in the fourth inning when Worley walked and Danny Cruz homered to left field. Mondelo was then hit by a pitch, Orbeta was walked and the two pulled off a double steal. A passed ball scored Mondelo before a walk to Alfonso. Another passed ball plated Orbeta and Sierra walked and stole second. Tejeda singled to score two runs and make it 10-0. The final two runs scored in the fifth when Danny Cruz led off with a walk (the Vipers staff issued ten in the game) and moved to second on a single by Ernesto (no emails) Rodriguez. Osmany Hernandez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cruz scored on a wild pitch and Rodriguez came in on a single by Angel Ponce de Leon. Sjostrom retired the first twelve batters he faced and was three outs away from a five-inning perfect game when Varela's leadoff hitter in the fifth singled. The Vipers fall to 2-10, 0-6 in the district. The Eagles can move into a tie for first place with a victory over Columbus on Monday.
