EAGLES DROP ANOTHER TIEBREAKER, 6-3, TO DUNEDIN

For the second time in three tournament games, Southwest dropped a game via the “international tiebreaker”, this time losing to Dunedin, 6-3, in 9 innings. The Falcons (11-5) were leading 2-0 after 5 ˝ innings when Eddie Sierra, who is hitting .455 in the tournament, started a rally with a one-out single. He stole second and was advanced to third on a Jordan Worley fly ball before scoring on an Angel Ponce de Leon single to left. The Eagles (7-6-1) tied the score in the bottom of the seventh when Lorenzo Hernandez was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a Danny Cruz fly ball before scoring on an Erick Mondelo single to right. The Florida League Tournament does not play typical extra innings and uses a tiebreaker where each extra inning begins with a runner on second base. Both teams were scoreless in the 8th, but Dunedin scored four in the top of the ninth and Southwest could answer with only one in their half of the inning. The final Eagles run came on a double by Ponce de Leon, who has won the designated hitter’s job after going 3-for-6 with a walk the last two days. The loss wasted an excellent outing by sophomore starting pitcher Gabe Sjostrom, who threw five and a third strong innings. Worley was even unluckier. He threw three no-hit innings of relief and gets charged with the loss. Southwest plays its final spring break game Friday at 11:30am at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium against IMG Academy.
