BRADDOCK WINS ON CONTROVERSIAL WALK-OFF BALK

The plate umpire called a controversial balk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give host Braddock a 6-5 district victory over Southwest. The Eagles (6-6, 1-5), who have lost four in a row, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jorge Tejeda reached on a force out, stole second, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a throwing error. The Bulldogs (12-2, 6-0) took a 4-1 lead with two runs in the first and two more in the second. Southwest tied the game in the fourth when Tejeda led off with a double and scored on a Brett Mantrana double. Pitcher Kike Aparicio, in the starting batting order for the first time this year, knocked in Mantrana with a ground out to short. Michael Piulats reached on an error, courtesy runner Matthew Sprinkle stole second and scored on a clutch, two-out hit by Eddie Sierra. The Eagles recaptured the lead, 5-4, in the top of the sixth when Lorenzo Hernandez doubled with one out, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a Danny Cruz single. Braddock tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Southwest threatened with a leadoff double by Mantrana in the top of the seventh but stranded two runners, leaving nine men on base during the game. In the bottom of the seventh, with two outs and nobody on, a walk and a single put runners on first and second. Southwest’s pitcher then faked a throw to first, which was an obvious balk, moving the runners to second and third. After a pitching change, with the Eagles one strike away from sending the game into extra innings, the plate umpire called a balk, claiming the new pitcher did not come to a complete stop in the stretch position.
