Frank Muiña, a 1988 graduate of Southwest, returns to Andre Dawson Field for his second stint as head coach of the junior varsity team. Muiña coached the JV in the early 90s and rejoined the coaching staff this past fall. A co-captain of the Eagles his senior year, he was a great glove-man at shortstop who hit .296 his senior year with 10 stolen bases. Pony, as he is nicknamed (because his older brother Pedro was nicknamed "horseface" when he played for Southwest), was a 2-year starter at wide receiver for the Eagles football team and went on to play college baseball at St. Thomas University. The Muiña family has a long tradition at Southwest. His other brother Carlos (class of '86) was a diver and both of his daughters are currently cheerleaders for the Eagles. |
