DID YOU KNOW?

***In 1972, district champion Southwest had one first team All-County selection (David Westberry) and four other players earned honorable mention. Senior Andre Dawson was not one of them!

***On February 11, 1981, Dane Johnson poured in 31 points to lead Southwest past Killian, 57-56, in basketball. Johnson, who went on to pitch in the major leagues for three years, never played high school baseball!

***Ray Bare, who pitched five years in the big leagues, didn't win a game for Southwest until his senior season of 1967! As a sophomore, he sat on the bench. He broke his ankle his junior year and, shortly after recovering, suffered a sore back. Ray made up for it in 12th grade. He threw two no-hitters and was removed from another game in the seventh inning with a no-hitter going.

***In the 1996 book Baseball in Florida, a history of the sport in this state, only six high schools are featured in the three pages devoted to the top prep baseball programs. Southwest received the biggest write-up.

***On May 7, 1964, Southwest became the first Dade county "white school" to face a "Negro school" in a sport other than track. The Eagles capitalized on 7 opposition errors in the first two innings to score 10 runs and coast to a 10-0 victory over George Washington Carver High.
